What is swivl?

Swivl is a small robotic device that works with a teacher’s ipad or mobile phone to record the lesson. Unlike a conventional video camera, swivl tracks the teacher as they move, meaning the teacher stays centre-frame even when moving around the classroom and monitoring. It also has much better audio quality than a conventional video camera and, through the use of a second microphone, allows you to capture audio from a particular student or group of students.

(If the left-hand light doesn’t turn green, go to the ipad, choose settings, then bluetooth and connect swivl.)

6 Take the microphone in the lanyard, place it around your neck and press the power button.

A red and a green light will appear. The red light on swivl will now change to green. Take a couple of steps to one side. The swivl should start to track you. However, remember that it can only track you when you are standing in view of the sensor (the black space under the S). It won’t track you if you are standing behind it.

How to record yourself using swivl

1 On the ipad, choose camera.

2 On the right-hand side, press where it says ‘Photo’ and move it down to ‘Video’. The onscreen image will become smaller and a red button will replace the white one.

3 Press the camera icon in the top-right corner. This will switch the video feed to the forward-facing camera. It must be on this for swivl to film you effectively. Your face will appear onscreen when it’s on the right setting.

4 Press the red button to start recording. The timer will start moving. Press the red button again when you want to stop the recording.

5 If you want to watch your video immediately, touch the small thumbnail in the bottom right. This will open the video. NB If you do a short video to test swivl before your class and want to watch it, remember to unplug the audio cable to hear the audio, but also remember to plug it back in before you start recording again.

Using swivl with a second microphone

1 Remove the second microphone from the back of the swivl robot by flicking up the flap.
